cooking this week WEDNESDAY Globally inspired: Triple D samples a world of flavors stateside By Michelle Rose TV Media S ummertime is travel time, but you don’t need to leave home to get a taste of the world. We’re living in an era when food blurs borders and interna- tional flavors are within easy reach. And in this week’s epi- sode of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” airing Friday, July 12, on Food Network, the Mayor of Flavortown is chowing down on global-inspired grub served stateside. In Wilmington, Delaware, Guy Fieri stops by a deli for a Cuban sandwich and sausages that offer a taste of Thailand. He then heads to a celebrity- owned Tiki joint in Kauai before heading back to the mainland, to San Diego, where a Leba- nese eatery cooks up authentic dishes that are anything but standard. With more people traveling and regional cuisines go- ing global, dishes that once seemed exotic are now familiar. The same goes for ingredients such as kimchi, sriracha, ha- rissa and za’atar — every new or new-to-some pantry staple opens up more flavor possibili- ties to satisfy our increasingly international paletes. And that’s a good thing, be- cause after all, changing tastes once propelled sushi and tacos into the mainstream. Of course, Fieri’s fans are no strangers to new flavors and different takes on the classics. Now in its 30th season (or the equivalent of 12 human years), Triple D has crisscrossed the country to uncover unique eats at more than 1,200 restaurants. That might seem like a lot of mileage, but Fieri shows no signs of slowing down. He has his culinary empire to manage and grow, plus he’s launching a new tequila with rocker Sammy Hagar. Fieri also plans to turn his Chicken Guy restaurant concept, with all 22 dipping sauces (including his Donkey Sauce), into a nation- wide chain. In May, Fieri became the third food personality to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with celebrity pal Mat- thew McConaughey on hand to give a speech. It’s a testament to the popu- larity of Food Network’s stand- out star, whose drop-ins tend to help boost business at many of the eateries featured in “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Tune in on Friday to discover three more. 3:00 p.m. KVEW The Rachael Ray Show (CC) FOOD Guy’s Grocery Games Guy’s dice decide the details of the chefs blue plate.
